Phase 6 - Response

This article does a great job of summarizing how fast food and healthy food differ. They mention the reasons why fast food is popular and also why healthy food is unpopular. The biggest reason is that fast food is accessible and healthy food isn't. Simple but it is a true statement. The author also pulls out the strengths of the healthy food and the weaknesses of fast food. Most of the strengths and weaknesses came with calories and nutrients for each food. The major factor in all of this is if the food is close by and cheap. Americans do not care if they get long term problems from their food, they just want it quick and cheap.

  1. Your response winds up being quite a bit of summary. The summary is approached in a different manner than your official summary, but overall, what you're doing in this paragraph is recapping the general content of the article for readers.

Your final sentence does move into response as you guess that Americans don't care. Certainly, there could be several reasons why Americans don't make the extra effort to get healthy food. One reason, as you point out, is a lack of concern. There could also be a lack of money (no margin in the grocery budget for expensive food, no car, etc.).

Don't forget that you were given a response sheet in class to help you formulate your response. Build in your reactions to the source. Does it surprise you that accessibility is one of the driving factors for fast food consumption? Did you start the project thinking it would be taste or advertising? You could also start to comment on how the material of this source lines up (or doesn't line up) with other sources since you've uncovered several different sources by this point in the project.
